Young South-African Baritone EDDIE MOFOKENG was born in Kroonstad into a family of musicians. He made his <Diploma in Music>, his <Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Society> and in <Hons. BA in Music> at the North Western University in Potchefstroom, studying with Prof. Santisa Viljoen, before he was awarded with an Erasmus scholarship for the Conservatory for Music and Dance in Cologne, where he received his Master’s Degree in 2020 with “summa cum laude”.

 

Masterclasses with among others Wolfgang Brendel, Brigitte Fassbaender, Lucio Gallo, Margreet Honig, Kobie van Rendsburg, John Norris or Jacques Le Roux completed his musical education.

Currently he works with Prof. Josef Protschka in Cologne.

 

Since the 2020/21 season, Eddie Mofokeng is a member of the ensemble at TfN / Theater für Niedersachsen in Hildesheim (Germany), where he ins 2023/24 will make his debuts as SHAUNARD in Puccini's "La Bohème", ROYAL PHYSICIAN & CHANCELLOR in Adolphe Adam's "Si, j'étais Roi", RINGOLD, King of the Land of Roses in Humperdinck's "Sleeping Beauty" and as COP in Stephen Paulus' "When the postman rings twice."


Soo far, Mr. Mofokeng appeared in Hildesheim as  Dr. FALKE in J. Strauß’ “Die Fledermaus”, BERTRANDO in S. Mercadante’s “I Briganti”, DOCTOR in Lee Beagley’s “In der Luft und anderswo”, IL MAGO MAGHREBINO & IL GRAN MINISTRO in Nino Rota’s “Aladino e  la lampada magica”, DANCAÏRO & MORALES in Bizet's "Carmen", and BARONE DOUPHOL in Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

As VALDEMARO in Francesco Gasparini's "Ambleto",  ZWIDDELDUM / SLEEPING MOUSE in Pierangelo Valtinoni's "Alice in Wonderland", Dr. SCHILLER in Ludger Vollmer's "Gegen die Wand" and as  WALLY WOMPER in Loesser's musical "How to succeed in business without really trying".

In addition, he sang Elgar’s “Sea Pictures” and Schubert’s “Winterreise” in staged performances.


Guest contracts led the singer as AENEAS in Purcell’s “Dido & Aeneas” and as part of the JAZZ TRIO and of the QUARTETT in Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti” and “A quiet Place” to the Theater Aachen, as ENRICO in Haydn's “L’Isola disabitata” to Castle Rheinsberg  Festival, as EISENSTEIN in “Die Fledermaus” to the Tel Aviv Theatre, as PAPAGENO in Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” in stage direction of Lotte de Beer to the Kampnagelfabrik-Theater  in Hamburg  and as BETTO di SIGNA in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” to the Nanjing Theatre and the Suzhuo Theatre at the <Sing Young Artist Festival>.

And in a production of the North West University, he appeared as  GUGLIELMO in Mozart’s “Cosí fan tutte”.


Due to the Covid-pandemic, his debut as at Oper Burg Gars Festival (Austria) in "Carmen", and his debut as COP in the European premiere of Stephen Paulu’s “The Postman always rings twice” at TfN had to be cancelled.


His studied parts include POLYPHEMUS in Händel's “Acis & Galathea”, FIGARO and FIORELLO in in Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and DANDINI in “La Cenerentola”, CONTE ALMAVIVA in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” and MERCUTIO in Goundo’s “Romeo & Juliette”.

 

In concert, the baritone has interpret Händel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Requiem by Fauré, and as member of the choir, he has performed with the Collegium Vocale Ghent under Philipp Herreweghe.

 

Eddie Mofokeng was  a Quarter-Finalist at <Neue Stimmen Singing Competition> in Gütersloh (Germany), an a Semi-Finalist at the <Internatinoal Otto Edelmann Singing Copetition> in Vienna and  the <Competizione dell’Opera> in Soschi (Russia).
